A major part of the Milwaukee Police Department’s (MPD) work involves responding to the crime that is a reality in our City. However, community violence is a symptom of underlying causes, including neighborhood segregation, concentrated poverty, and easy access to guns. Reimagining public safety requires that we work to address these root causes and not situate responsibility solely with police.
MPD is committed to improving its services to residents of the City of Milwaukee. Accordingly, in the Summer of 2022 MPD, the Community Collaborative Commission (CCC—a City of Milwaukee commission comprised of various community representatives), and the Fire and Police Commission (FPC) commenced hosting 15 community meetings, with one held in each of the 15 aldermanic districts. These meetings are open to the entire community with the objective of gathering community input and fostering an environment of decision-making in which residents and community leaders share the responsibility for addressing community challenges. These meetings are documented and a formal report with recommendations and findings will be produced as a result. These recommendations will be incorporated into a forthcoming community policing plan.
Your participation in this collaboration would greatly assist in our collective efforts to address the public safety issues we currently face citywide. By working with community members we all have a much better chance of success. I look forward to seeing you at the meeting. These meetings are hosted by members of the Community Collaboration Commission, the Fire and Police Commission and the Milwaukee Police Department.
